Protected Under His Wings: Reflecting on Luke 13:31-35

Published October 30, 2025

In today's gospel reading, we encounter Jesus at a pivotal moment. Warned by Pharisees that Herod seeks his life, Jesus responds not with fear but with unwavering purpose. His reply to "that fox" reveals a divine determination that cannot be deterred by earthly threats.

The Courage of Christ

"I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day," Jesus declares. These words remind us that true faith isn't about avoiding danger—it's about fulfilling our God-given purpose regardless of the cost. Jesus knew what awaited him in Jerusalem, yet he pressed forward with resolute love.

A Heart That Longs to Gather

The most poignant moment in this passage comes in Jesus' lament over Jerusalem. He compares himself to a mother hen longing to gather her chicks under her wings—an image of tender protection and sacrificial love. This isn't the stern voice of judgment we might expect, but the broken heart of a savior watching his beloved people turn away.

How many times have we, like Jerusalem, refused the shelter God offers? How often do we resist the very love that seeks to protect us?

The House Left Desolate

Jesus warns that the house will be "left to you"—abandoned to its own devices. This isn't God withdrawing in anger, but the natural consequence of rejecting divine protection. When we push away the One who shields us, we're left vulnerable to the very dangers we think we can handle alone.

Our Response Today

This gospel challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we running toward God's sheltering wings or away from them? Do we trust His timing and purpose even when the path ahead seems dangerous?

Jesus' journey to Jerusalem wasn't just about his own sacrifice—it was about showing us what perfect love looks like. Love that persists despite rejection. Love that keeps its arms open even when pushed away. Love that willingly walks into suffering for the sake of others.

Today, let us respond to the invitation we hear in Jesus' words. Let us stop resisting and allow ourselves to be gathered, protected, and transformed by the One who loves us enough to die for us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help us to recognize when we're running from your protective love. Give us the courage to surrender our stubborn independence and rest beneath your sheltering wings. Like you, may we press forward in faith, trusting that your purpose is always good, even when the path is difficult. Amen.
