Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 - The Mission of the Seventy-Two

Published July 06, 2025

"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." - Luke 10:2

Scripture Reading

In today's Gospel, Jesus appoints seventy-two disciples and sends them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He tells them that the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few, instructing them to travel light, depend on hospitality, heal the sick, and proclaim that the kingdom of God is at hand.

When the seventy-two return with joy, reporting that even demons submit to them in Jesus' name, Christ reminds them that their true cause for rejoicing should not be their power over spirits, but that their names are written in heaven.

Rosary Connection: The Joyful Mysteries

This Gospel passage beautifully connects to the Third Joyful Mystery - The Nativity, where we contemplate how God chose humble circumstances to bring salvation to the world. Just as Jesus was born in simplicity, he now sends his disciples out with nothing but trust in divine providence.

The joy of the returning disciples also echoes the Fourth Joyful Mystery - The Presentation, where Simeon and Anna recognized the salvation of the Lord. Like these faithful servants, the seventy-two experienced the joy of participating in God's salvific work.

Meditation Points

1. Called to Mission Every baptized Christian shares in this same mission. We are all sent forth to be laborers in God's harvest. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, we are called to bring the peace and healing of Christ to others.

2. Traveling Light Jesus instructs his disciples to take no money bag, no sack, no sandals. This radical simplicity teaches us to trust in God's providence rather than our own resources. What excess baggage might be hindering our spiritual journey?

3. The Power of Peace The disciples are to offer peace to every house they enter. In our divided world, we are called to be agents of reconciliation and peace, bringing Christ's healing presence wherever we go.

4. True Joy While the disciples rejoice in their spiritual power, Jesus redirects their focus to the ultimate joy - that their names are written in heaven. Our deepest happiness comes not from earthly achievements but from our relationship with God.
