Every year, the same jokes appear in Catholic circles. "What are you giving up for Lent?" Chocolate. Social media. Complaining. And every year, by March 15th or so, most of those things are quietly reinstated.
There is nothing wrong with giving something up for Lent. But Lent was never primarily about self-improvement. If your Lenten practice ends on Easter Sunday and leaves you essentially unchanged, something has been missed.
The three pillars
The Church has always described Lent in terms of three practices: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These are not three separate options to choose from. They are three legs of a stool, and they support each other.
Prayer deepens your attention and opens you to God. Fasting disciplines the body and creates space — literal space in your day, and interior space in your desires. Almsgiving takes what fasting frees up and directs it outward, toward others. The structure is intentional: self-denial in service of generosity, generosity grounded in prayer.
The diet framing — Lent as a willpower challenge, a spiritual self-optimization exercise — loses this. It makes Lent about the self. The tradition makes Lent about conversion: a real turning, from one direction to another.
The forty days
The number isn't arbitrary. Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days before beginning his public ministry. The Israelites wandered the desert for forty years. Moses spent forty days on Sinai. Noah's flood lasted forty days.
In scripture, forty is the number of preparation through trial. Lent is not an end in itself. It is preparation for the Triduum — the three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil — which are the center of the entire Christian year.
If Easter catches you by surprise, something about Lent has gone wrong.
What conversion actually looks like
The Greek word in the Gospels is metanoia — often translated as "repentance," but closer in meaning to "a change of mind" or "a turning around." It is a reorientation. Not just feeling sorry, but facing a different direction.
Real conversion isn't dramatic, usually. It looks like choosing the patient response instead of the sharp one. It looks like calling someone you've been avoiding. It looks like sitting with discomfort instead of immediately reaching for a phone. Small turnings, repeated, add up.
Lent offers forty days to practice this. To choose, deliberately, against a habitual pattern. Not to feel better about yourself, but to become more available — to God, to the people around you, to the life you're actually living.
A practical suggestion
Choose one thing to add, not just remove. A daily decade of the Rosary. Five minutes of silent prayer before bed. One act of concrete generosity per week. The tradition of fasting from something is valuable, but it works best when what you're freeing up flows somewhere.
The empty space created by fasting is meant to be filled. Make sure you know with what.
