Building on the Rock: Reflections on Matthew 7:21, 24-27
In today's gospel reading, Jesus presents us with a powerful image that cuts to the heart of authentic faith. He tells us about two builders: one who constructs his house on solid rock, and another who builds on shifting sand. When the storms come—and they always do—only one house remains standing.
More Than Words
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven."
These words challenge us deeply. Jesus isn't impressed by our eloquent prayers or our public declarations of faith. What matters is whether we actually live what we profess. Faith without action is like a house without a foundation—it looks good until the first storm hits.
The Storms Will Come
Notice that Jesus doesn't promise the wise builder will avoid the rain, floods, and winds. Both houses face the exact same storms. Following Christ doesn't exempt us from life's difficulties, trials, or suffering. The difference isn't in what we face, but in what sustains us when we face it.
The foundation matters. When our lives are built on Christ's teachings—not just knowing them, but doing them—we can withstand anything.
What Does It Mean to Build on Rock?
Building on rock means: - Choosing obedience over convenience. Following Christ's teachings even when it's difficult or countercultural. - Putting faith into action. Loving our neighbors, serving the poor, forgiving those who hurt us, speaking truth with compassion. - Aligning our daily choices with God's will. Making decisions based on eternal values rather than temporary comfort. - Developing spiritual depth through prayer and relationship with God. This is where we find the strength to endure.
A Question for Advent
As we journey through Advent, preparing our hearts for Christ's coming, this gospel invites us to examine our foundations. Are we building on rock or sand? Are we merely going through the motions of faith, or are we genuinely rooted in Christ?
The beauty of this season is that it offers us time to rebuild, to strengthen our foundations, to align our lives more closely with the One we claim to follow.
The storms are coming. They always do. But if we build our lives on Christ—not just saying his name, but living his way—we will stand firm.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to be a doer of your word, not merely a hearer. Give me the wisdom to build my life on the solid foundation of your teachings. When the storms come, may I find my strength in you. Amen.
